Summer is a big deal for many people including gamers. Younger and older gamers alike often have free time during the summer to play games, lots of new games are released, and the summer game show season kicks off with E3.

The latest major publisher to announce that it will be skipping Gamescom 2022 is Sony. An official speaking on behalf of Sony confirmed that PlayStation will not be present at the show. It’s a bit of a surprise, considering there are still some big hits coming for the PS5 in 2022, and additional games already have fans excited for 2023. It’s not the first company to announce this move, though.

In addition to Sony, Activision Blizzard, Take-Two Interactive and Nintendo have confirmed that they will not be attending Gamescom. With major releases in the works from these three publishers, fans may have been hoping to hear more about them during the event. However, that doesn’t mean there’s bad news for those games.

Both Nintendo and PlayStation have been revealing games on their own terms for some time now. Between Nintendo Direct and State of Play, gamers can learn all about the latest games coming to their consoles via simulcast over the internet, without having to wait for a physical event. While Nintendo still has some big releases scheduled for this year, notably it didn’t hold a Nintendo Direct during Summer Games Fest, although there is now a xenoblade chronicles 3 direct planning.

There are a few likely possibilities as to why game developers and publishers are skipping big events like these. One aspect is the COVID-19 pandemic, which has changed the face-to-face meeting and conference landscape. With no certainty as to whether or not the world would return to normal for this year’s major gaming events, some publishers may have simply shied away from putting together presentations and demos of their latest games, fearing the work would be for naught in the event. of an unexpected cancellation.

However, it is also possible that as major publishers pull out of events like these, others may decide to follow suit. Every major publisher that skips an event can result in decreased viewership overall, which affects any publisher that decides to hold presentations or launch demos. With several major gaming events still planned for the rest of the year, it remains to be seen if things will return to normal or if 2022 sees a major shakeup in how new games are revealed and detailed.
